Lay Summary: Excessive social media use is prevalent among youth and it has been associated with depression and anxiety. Lowering social media use has been shown to reduce symptoms of mental distress and loneliness in adults. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of reduced social media use on mental distress in youth, a population that has never known a world without social media.
