Lay Summary:  In pediatric research, permission for the child to participate in research is obtained from the child’s legal guardian when a child is not able to provide consent for themself. When possible, we also ask the child if they want to be part of the research study. This is called assent. We are seeking children and youth who were admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), or caregivers of children or youth who were admitted to the PICU, to participate in a survey or virtual interview. The goal of this research project is to understand child, youth and caregiver perspectives on how patients should be part of the decision to participate in a research study while they are in the PICU. This information will be used to create guidelines for assent for research in the PICU.

To participate in this study, you can choose to complete a survey, or to do a virtual interview:

Survey: The survey will take approximately 15 minutes. Once you complete the survey, you will be given the option of entering your name in a draw for a $25 Amazon or Visa gift card.

Interview: The interview will be done by Zoom or telephone (your choice) and will take approximately 30 minutes. As a thank you for your time, you will be given a $25 Amazon or Visa gift card after you complete the interview.
