Launching Precision Rewired: A CHEO Research Institute Limited Series Podcast on the future of child and youth mental health

08/07/2026

Ottawa, Ontario — Wednesday July 8, 2026

How can we move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches to mental health care and toward treatments tailored to each child’s unique needs?

These are the types of questions explored in Precision Rewired, a new six-episode podcast series from the CHEO Research Institute’s Precision Child and Youth Mental Health (PCYMH) Collaboratory.

Hosted by Dr. Kathleen Pajer, Medical Director of the PCYMH Collaboratory, the series brings together leading researchers, clinicians, and innovators to discuss how advances in genomics, artificial intelligence, data science, and lived experience are transforming our understanding of child and youth mental health.

With a new episode released every two weeks, Precision Rewired offers listeners an inside look at the research and partnerships helping drive the next generation of mental health care – care that is more personalized, predictive, and responsive to the needs of children, youth, and families.

“Precision mental health is about understanding the whole child,” says Dr. Pajer. “By bringing together insights from biology, environment, technology, and lived experience, we can work toward delivering the right care at the right time.”

The future of child and youth mental health

Across six episodes, listeners will hear from experts working at the forefront of mental health research and innovation. Topics will include:

  • How precision mental health research and care is transforming outcomes
  • The role of data, AI, and genomics in care decisions
  • Why environment, lived experience, and biology must be integrated
  • How collaboration is accelerating innovation across Canada

Episode 1: Beyond Single Data Points

The first episode features Dr. Paul Arnold, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary and Principal Investigator of PAN-GEM (Pan-Canadian Initiative Linking Genomic, Environmental and Mental Health Data in Children and Youth).

Dr. Arnold discusses how researchers are combining genomic, environmental, and clinical information from 11 major Canadian studies to better understand mental health conditions and improve outcomes for children and youth.

The conversation highlights both the promise and challenges of building a future where mental health care can be tailored to individual needs rather than relying on generalized approaches.
