Dr. Bernard Thébaud and fellow researchers at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, co-authored a recent editorial in Cytotherapy in an effort to create awareness for an upcoming Delphi approach to (1) define mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and (2) clinical reporting guidelines to reduce controversy and enhance transparency and successful clinical translation. Dr. Thébaud and team are the only group in Canada working with mesenchymal stromal cells in pediatrics.
“For any topic to be studied systematically, there is a need for clarity in definition. The definition of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is presently ambiguous in the literature, and the misleading interchangeable terminology of MSCs as mesenchymal stromal or stem cells is common.”
